Sir, Your Ilawera readers were pleased with the favorable and full report of the Secretary of the Hawcra Medical Society, but it would ill become me to pass without offering my tribute of praise on the really excellent composition of the letter. Stralford-on-Avon being noted as the birthplace of Shakespeare, Ilawera—the city of the Plains—must necessarily he remarkable hereafter as having at one time this collossal intellect as an inhabitant. Notwithstanding - , the admiring Ilawerians unanimously agree that the matter of erecting a bust to his honor must be left to generations yet unborn. Regarding (he agitation re salary of secretary, the question comes. Does the County require a good business man ? If so, he” must be paid well, for there are those who would he dear at any salary. Ho is a poor business man whose undivided services are worth a penny less than T250 a-year. Many wore pleased with your excellent article on this subject last month. Penny wisdom won’t answer even as a bait for popularity. Let the services of the best man be procured, and pay him a good salary. The bachelors of Ilawera act the host on Thursday, by giving a pic-nic to the Ilawcrians, which, no doubt, will he duly appreciated It is proposed to hold it somewhere near Mr Hamilton’s grounds. Any Patea friends who can make it convenient to attend, will bo welcome. A Sunday-school has been started at Norm an by, under the leadership of -Messrs Wilson and Robson, which the children take an evident delight in attending. Friends from Ilawera have engaged to assist, until the school is in working order. The Ilawera Town Hall Company is in a fair way, and it is hoped that ere many months elapse we may have the benefits of a spacious hall. —I am, &c., NEW Cll EM.
