CARLYLE TOWN BOARD.
The usual monthly meeting of the Town Board was held on Monday evening last, when there were present—-Messrs Milroy (chair), Williams, Rhodes, McCarthy, and Hirst. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. A letter was received from Mr Hammerlon, of Taranaki, stating that lie could not register the leases of the Board’s reserves as they, as yet, lad no legal title to them, and asking the Board to at once communicate with Major Atkinson on the subject. Other letters on the same subject, one from Mr McCarthy, member of the Board, and another from Mr J. Johnstone, were read, in which both these gentlemen asked for the delivery of their leases. Mr Johnstone wanted his forthwith, but Mr McCarthy asked for his within fourteen days.
This led to a very prolonged discussion, members present evidently seeing that they were at a disadvantage. Mr Johnstone attended personally, and explained that he was willing to make any reasonable terms, hut that failing to obtain satisfaction, lie required £IBO for loss of time, and expenses put to in connection with them
Mr Hirst stated one instance where a lease had been held over some time, and the lessor could not force the lessee to complete his bargain in consequence. The Board resolved itself into committee to consider the knotty question, and it was ultimately resolved that a deputation should wait on Captain Wray, and request that gentleman to take measures to have the difficulty removed, and use his endeavor to have the titles completed. The matter therefore was left in abeyance, and no answer given to Mr Johnstone’s letter, or that of Mr McCarthy. A report was received from the Inspector of Nuisances, in which was stated certain complaints that lie had made, hut which had been rectified. The report was received.
The Town Clerk stated the financial position of the Board as follows :—They had in the bank at the present time to their credit £B2 17s. 7d. but out of this £52 14s. was on deposit account, and after other accounts had been paid, their real balance would be £io 3s. 7d. All labor had been paid up to the week ending September 25th, but no dray hire had been pai I, and one weeks labor was due. There was Vork-street contract as well.
The Chairman remarked that it appeared to him that they wore in fact some £43 in debt, and when all the work contiacted for was finished they would owe about £GO. It seemed however, that the bank would extricate the Board from this difficulty, and the matter dropped.
The Chairman announced that he would employ a laborer for a day, on the completion of present contracts, for the purpose of making the approach to the Town Hall. This was unanimously agreed to. An extchslon of time (14 days) for completion of the Cemetery fencing contract was granted to 11. I. Davis. A discussion, arising out of some facts stated by the Town Clerk, took place in reference to the necessity for an office for the Board. It was resolved that the office lately occupied by Mr. Adams, solicitor, in the Town Hall should be taken, at ss. per Week, and the thanks of the Board were unanimously voted to Mr. Sherwood roe his kindness in affording accoimuodafor so long a time.
Some other business of an unimportant nature was done, after which the Board adjourned.
