UNIVERSITY LAW STUDENTS
AIOCK TRIAL. The Law Students’ Debating Society held a very successful mock criminal trial last week, Air C. J. L. White capably fulfilling the duties of judge. Air J. W. Howarth, with him Air I. B. Stevenson, appeared as Crown Prosecutor, and Air J. G. Warrington, with him Air P. H. W. Nevill, as counsel for the defence. The role of prisoner was taken by Air G. C. Cruickshank, and Air J. H. Kemnitz acted as registrar. The trial, which commenced at the inception of the common jury, proceeded in an orderly fashion, a realistic touch being lent by the robing of judge and counsel. The indictment contained four counts — one of arson, one of attempted arson, and two of mischief. It was apparent that the witnesses had been well schooled in their parts, and that considerable time had been spent in the preparation of the trial.
At the conclusion, Air White was accorded a hearty vote of thanks, both for his services as judge and for his assistance in preparing the trial. It is hoped that other items of this nature will be included in the syllabus in future.
