STATE ADVANCES
NEW SUPERINTENDENT. The appointment of Air E. O. Hales as Superintendent of State Advances in succession to Air AV. Waddel, C.8.E., who has retired at his own request, was announced by the Prime Minister (Air G. W. Forbes) on Saturday. Air Waddel has been appointed a member of the Hawke’s Bay Rehabilitation Commission. His successor at present holds the position of Assistant Public Trustee, and he will assume his new office at the end of this month. Air Hales has been Assistant Public Trustee since 1921, and he has had wide experience of financial questions. In addition, he has held a seat on the State Advances Board, as well as on the boards of other State lending departments. He is a son of the late Mr W. H. Hales, a former Engineer-in-Chief to the Public Works Department. He was educated at Wellington College, joining the head office staff of the Public Trust in December, 1894. Since then he has passed through all branches of the office, and he has filled the position of inspector in head office and Deputy Public Trustee at Dunedin and at Auckland. He has been associated with sport for many years, and he has represented the Wellington province in both cricket and Rugby football. For some years he was chairman of the Wellington Rugby Union, and he has served on the committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union. Air Waddel has been connected with the State Advances Office since its inception in 1895. Born in Southland, and educated at the Southland Boys’ High School, he Was appointed officer in charge of. the .department two years after he joined it, and in 1907 he was promoted to the position of deputy-superintendent, which he held until 1922, when he became permanent head. Air Waddel wao also a member of the Public Trust Office Investment Board, the Government Insurance Board, the State Fire Insurance Board, the Dominion Land Purchase Board, the Public Service Superannuation Board, and the Rural Intermediate Credit Board.
