MOTOR ACCIDENT
DR THACKER SUED FOR DAMAGES. CHRISTCHURCH, May 28. Dr H. T. J. Thacker was sued in the Supreme Court to-day by South Island Motors, Ltd., for £2B7—alleged to be the amount of damages to a car lent to him —as the result of an accident in which his chauffeur became involved on the road to Akaroa in November, 1930. The defence denied allegations that care was not taken and that the defendant was under any liability. Questioned by counsel for the defendant, the managing director of the company (Mr V. J. M'Kibbon) said that immediately the car went out of their possession the garage cover lapsed. Dr Thacker should have transferred his own policy to the car loaned. Dr Thacker, in evidence, said that when he arranged for the loan of the car nothing was said about insurance. The car was smashed in an accident when being driven by his chauffeur, but on that occasion the chauffeur had taken the car for his own purposes, and without witness’s permission. Judgment was reserved.
