WEEKLY MARKET REPORT. _ . Burnside, May 27. Fat Cattle.—The double market to-day produced some specially fine, well finished cattle of different grades, the entry comprising about 400 head. The yarding was not a large one considering that it wds a double market, but it proved to be more than sufficient for requirements as two of the leading butchers had purchased their supplies outside, and consequently were not operating except for a few special pens. The majority of the entry was made up of bullocks, and there was also a good sprinkling of heifers and cows. A good number of the bullocks were, of outstanding quality, but did not reach high values. In fact, this class was not sought after, and sold at prices very much less per 1001 b than the lighter grades. Cows were not in demand, and values for these eased considerably. There w T as an easing in values for all classes, but heavy bullocks and cows suffered most. At the beginning of the sale values were fully 20s below last week’s rates, and there was a decided easing as the sale progressed, and when the last two races were offered it was practically impossible to make sales even at prices considerably below opening rates. There were practically no butchers present at this stage of the sale, and a great many pens were passed out unsold. Quotations: Extra prime

The quality, taken all over, was good, and there were several consignments >f extra good heavy wethers. There were more heavy ewes forward than at recent sales, and these met with slightly I etter competition owing to the freezing buyers being keen competitors for the lighter grades, for which thev were operating at increased limits. Taken al] oven ae sale was a good one, although there was no noticeable rise in heavy wethers, ‘out the medium and light sorts sold at increased- rates, the rise in this class being fully Is 6d. Light ewes also improved to the extent of Is 6d to 2s? There were some specially fine show wethers forward, but the demand for these was limited, and the values for them were uot much in advance of the good butchers’ sheep. OAMARU MARKETS OAMARU, May 29. There are still a few lines of wheat coming forward, and as millers are more disposed to purchase, any lines of free wheat have been sold at the ruling prices of 6s 2d Velvet, 6s Hunter’s, and 5s 1 I Tuscan, f.o.b. There is only a moderate demand for fowl wheat at 5s 2d, f.o.b. The oats market remains firm, ,and offer ings are on the light side. Heavy A Gartons are worth 2s sd, A’s 2s 4d, and B’s 2s 2d. ' Chaff is now being offered tn fair quantities, and is worth £3 on trucks.’ There is a fair inquiry for new season’s cowgrass, but so far no lines have come forward. The stock market continues to be very quiet, private sales during the week comprising:—Fat lambs, Ils 6d, 16s; fat ewes, 7s, 10s, Ils 9d; fat wethers, 15s; store lambs, 8s 3d, 9s; light fat bullocks, £6 15s; fat heifers, £5 15s. SOUTHLAND MARKETS INVERCARGILL, May 30. During the week .the market has been in a more or less somnolent state so far as grade oats are concerned though a fair amount of business has been done in socalled undergrade oats on sample. These are distinctly prevalent this year, and owing to the nature of the season the colour is somewhat below the actual grades in existence. The oats themselves are quite sound in every way, and of good weight, and bring approximately the same price f.o.b as B grade, being, in the opinion of most buyers, quite equal value if not even rather better quality. Values paid are 2s IOJd A’s, 2s 9d B’s, undergrades from 2s 7d to 2s BAd depending on quality. As can be expected in a season such as we have recently experienced, quite a lot of . oats are distinctly undergrade. Chaff is on offer rather in excess of local demand, and though in some instances merchants have been willing to buy at £3 on trucks for prime quality, little interest is shown at such a figure, and the tendency is that the prices come rather lower to the grower.
There is almost an entire absence of demand for ryegrass from the north, with the sole exception of occasional inquiries through brokers for undressed seed from the mill. Germinations are most, irregular, much of the seed being low in that respect, but nevertheless germinations up to 85 are not altogether uncommon. Values for machine-dressed seed are nominally from 3s lOd to 4s 3d per bushel, variation in price being in accordance with weight and germination. •The movement in Chewing’s fescue has been rather of a retrograde nature during the week, due in all probability to the falling off of volume of orders from overseas. Values for machine-dressed seed of good weight, germination and purity, between merchants are just a shade in excess of Is per lb. Supplies are now almost entirely in the hands of merchants, though some few growers still have to dispose of their crops. The stock market has been very quiet during the past week, there being smaller yardings in all classes, and values remain much the same as those ruling for some time back. Fat cattle are coming forward in numbers rather in excess of local requirements, and the market is dull for any other than animals of good quality. The fat sheep market is well supplied, and yardings are keeping well up in this section, with an increase in export schedule. Values have firmed, and the market for both fat lamb and fat sheep is much better than for a considerable time back. The store sheep market is very quiet, offerings are much reduced, and values have eased to such
an extent that prices to-day are lower than for many years. The store cattle market is also quiet, with little business being transacted.
