A well-known Wanganui angler who had been fishing on the delta mouth of the Tongariro River made a good meal off a succulent chicken and threw the leg and wing bones of the bird into the lake after he had done justice to it. Some time afterwards he hooked and caught a 61b rainbow trout which he cleaned on the lake shore. To his great surprise he found the chicken bones inside the fish. This story was not related by the angler himself, but is vouched for by Ranger M’Namara. No doubt the angler would have been afraid to tell the story himself.
