MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the committee of the Otago A. and P. Society was held in the board room on Friday afternoon, and was attended by Messrs James Begg (president, in the chair). W. O. MKellar, F. J. Conn. IL T. Kirk, T. J. Gawn, H. C. Campbell, 11. Turner, E. M. North, S. Bowman, A. Johnson, A. Mac Kay, H. Howat, and John Young. The executive reported that it had dealt with several matters since the last monthly meeting, and begged to submit the following recommendations:—(l) That Messrs H. Turner and E. F. Duthie be appointed to represent the society at the Royal Agricultural Society’s Conference to be held in Wellington on June 24. (2) That in reference to the request of holding a conference of kindred associations during Show Week, the executive recommends that unless some association can be formed to enable any definite resolution being given effect to, that no conference be held. (3) The executive recommends that no action be taken in connection with the Timaru A. and P. Society’s

resolution in regard to the price of tallow and the control of whale oil. (4) That in regard to the proposal that special prizes should be offered to farmers to encourage them to improve their grass lands, it was decided to ask the support of the two fertiliser conipanies in regard to the granting of prizes and the submitting of conditions. (5) It was decided that Mr H. Turner be recommended as president for the ensuing year; that Mr S. Bowman be recommended as vice-president; that Mr David Andrew, one of the society’s expresidents, be elected as an hon. life member; and that Mr Joseph Mosley be nominated to the committee to represent the Bruce and Clutha district. After the matters had been fully discusseed the executive report was adopted on the motion of the president. The Prime Minister (Mr G. W. Forbes) advised that he exceedingly regretted that his official engagements prevented him from visiting Dunedin and officially opening the Otago Winter Show. The president stated that the Minister of Agriculture (Mr A. J. Murdoch) would officially open the show. The Dunedin Chamber of Commerce submitted correspondence with the Prim’ Minister in connection with the appointment of a representative on the proposed Railway Board, which was read and noted. The secretary read correspondence with the City Council asking permission to erect a canvas passage-way betyeen Brydone Hall and Dalgety’s wool store, the society agreeing to accept all responsibility of any claim that might arise in connection therewith. The Government Dairy Produce Department submitted the results of the cheese grading competition to the factory gaining the highest aggregate points during their season’s output, and, on the motion of Mr Bowman, the report was received and the department thanked for its assistance and information. The Clydesdale Horse Society wrote forwarding a medal won by Mr John Young, of Allanton, and the secretary was instructed to acknowledge the letter and thank the society for its support. The North Otago A. and P. Society wrote asking for the society’s support in a proposal to alter the dipping season in the South Island, and after the matter had been fully discussed it was decided to take no action in the matter. It was decided to admit blind people into the show free during Show Week, and that school children, either from town or country schools in charge of a teacher or some responsible person, would be admitted free between the hours of 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Friday, June 5. The secretary of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board forwarded a circular letter in connection with the nomination of delegates to attend the conference in Wellington, and take part in the election of directors. It was decided to confer with the sheep owners and the New Zealand Farmers’ Union in regard to the names of those nominated to take part in this election.

Messrs John Hellyer, E. M. North, and J. M’Gregor were nominated as judges of the calves entered by the Boys and Girls’ Agricultural Club, and it was decided that Mr A. H. Congalton be asked to assist as referee in the Home Industries section. The president reported that 170 entries had been received from Mr David Martin, of Jleaumont, for competition at the Winter Show, and he moved that a letter of appreciation be sent to Mr Martin thanking him for his support and interest of the society’s operations. The chairman remarked that Mr Martin clearly proved that, with close cultivation and labour, what fanners could produce, and that it only required a few farmers of his calibre to assure the society of good competition in several of the sections. A complete list of judges and class stewards was submitted and approved. The president stated that in many of the sections there was keen competition, and that it would be essential that all members should make a point of being present and give every assistance in seeing that all exhibits were properly staged, so that the judging could be commenced promptly on Tuesday morning.
