PETROL PRICE WAR
REDUCTIONS IN CHRISTCHURCH. CHRISTCHURCH, May 23. A petrol price war was started in the city this morning as the result of the action of most of the large motor firms breaking away from the Petrol Resellers’ Association. In one garage first grade petrol was sold at Is 9d a gallon, and it is expected that by Monday price-cutting will be fairly general. The reason for the price war, it is stated, is that many of the garage proprietors feel that the service stations have been encroaching on the work of the garages to too large an extent. An agreement has been entered into between the garage proprietors and the service station men, but this was not fully honoured by all the parties to it. Matters came to a head this week, and at a meeting of garage proprietors, held yesterday afternoon, it was agreed that each firm should be given a free hand regarding the prices it charged for petrol. Most of the garage firms also broke away from the Petrol Resellers’ Association. There has been no reduction in the bulk prices charged to the retailers.
