LORNEVILLE STOCK SALE

INVERCARGILL, May 19. There were only medium entries in all sections at the weekly Lorneville stock sale sale, which was held to-day in cold weather before an average attendance. There was a good entry of fat sheep and lambs of excellent qaulity, which met a good sale at current prices. Heavy butcher’s lambs reached the highest values for several months, although the entry of fat cattle was onlj’ about half that of the previous week. There was little demand after the first race had been sold, and the bulk of the remainder failed to interest buyers, and were passed in.

Only two lines were forward in the store sheep section, and these sold in accordance with current rates. There was a fair entry in the store cattle section, but the quality was poor, and buyers evinced little interest, passings being frequent.

Fat Sheep.—-There was a keen demand fop good quality lamb, heavy butchers’ sorts making up to 18s. Prime heavy lamb sold from 16s to 17s 6d; lighter sorts, 12s to 14s 6d; prime heavy wethers, to 15s 9d; heavy wethers, to 14s 6d; with lighter, Ils to 13s. WAIAREKA SALE There was only a small yarding of stock at the Waiareka sale on Tuesday. In the fat cattle two small steers sold at £3 7s 6d, and a small heifer at £3 10s, while two fat cows were passed. Fat ewes sold for 5s 6d, 6s. and 7s; light fat wethers, 9s 6d; and prime wethers at 14s 9d. Fat lambs realised Ils, Us 9d, 14s, and 16s 6d. Two-tooth crossbred wethers made Ils 3d, mixed sex lambs in forward condition, 9s sd; and small lambs, 5s 7d. In the store cattle two yearling steers sold at 20s; calves, ss; empty cow, £1 17s 6d; and dairy cows at profit at £8 2s 6d and £9 10s. GRAIN AND PRODUCE REPORT Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report as follows: — Oats. —Business in oats remains quiet, and so far there has been no upward move in shipping quotations. At present rates there has been fair inquiry from shippers, but the volume of business passing is not large. A large number of samples coming to hand, particularly from southern districts, are discoloured, and fail to grade A’s. Weights are generally satisfactory. Values remain at 2s 2d on trucks for A’s for shipment, w’th B's at 2s and undergrades at Is 10d. Millers are paying 2s 3d for suitable lines. Wheat.—Any milling lines offering are being taken by millers at poo] rates, which are as follow:—Tuscan, 5s lOd: Hunters, 6s; Velvet, 6s 2d, f.o.b. Fowl wheat is now plentiful, but a number of samples are very thin and undergrade quality. Sales of good whole quality are being made at 5s per bushel, ex store. Chaff.—Consignments have eased off during the last week or two, which has helped to reduce store stocks, but the demand is very slow. There still seems to be plenty of green feed available. Owing to comparatively low quotations from Canterbury and Blenheim, no shipping is being done from this port. Prime chaff is worth £4 ss, ex truck. Potatoes.—Supplies have been heavy during the last week or two, and as merchants are at present well supplied the bulk of the consignments arriving have been taken into store. The quality this year appears to be generally good. The nominal value to-day ex store is £3 15s to £4 per ton. LAMB PRICES The Otago Farmers’ Co-operative Association of New Zealand, Limited, is in receipt of the following cablegram frmn its London agents: — Lamb.—Temporary slackness in prices, but market firm. Anticipated further increase in price end of month. Wethers and ewes meet with keen inquiry. Sharp rise all grades. Market prices: Lamb, 7d to 7-}d; seconds, 6d to mutton. 3Jd to 4Ad. DAIRY PRODUCE The South Island Dairy Association, Ltd., has received the following market report from the New Zealand Produce Association, Ltd., London: — Butter.—Firm, with more inquiry; 108 s to UOs; unsalted, 110 s to 114 s; Danish, 118 s to 119 s; Siberian. 995. Cheese. —Firm; white, 48s to 50s; coloured. 50s to 535. NEW WOOL TOP EXCHANGE NEW YORK, May IS. The new wool top exchange opened with a first day’s trade of approximately 150,0001 b of wool. Prices slumped throughout the session, lacking support and experiencing decreases from the opening figures of 30 to 70 points. September opened at 74.20 and closed at 73.90. April opened at 74.4 and closed at 74. THE WHEAT MARKET LONDON, May 18. Wheat: Cargoes are quiet, with sellers offering 3d down. Parcels are poor in request. The Rangitata’s New Zealand apples realised: Delicious, Us to 13s; Jonathans, Us 6d to 13s; Dunns, Us to 12s. THE BRADFORD MARKET LONDON, May 18. The Bradford market is weak, with no inquiry. LONDON WOOL SALES LONDON, May 17. Mr Devereux, the Australian wool representative, reports that last week’s London sales witnessed good general competition, closing active, but without any improvement in prices. The offerings consisted largely of speculators’ parcels and wools purchased foi* exchange, with scourers’ consignments. The carry-over was 72,000 bales. The interval before the next series (July 7) will give a muchneeded period for digestion of the heavy imports. The position at Yorkshire is unchanged. There is a slightly better tone for merino tops and crossbred tops. Prices for merino crossbred yarns are also unaltered. Negotiations in France with the textile operatives continue, but work lis not yet suspended. Reports from Geri many indicate dullness.

SOUTHLAND STOCK REPORT (From Our Own Correspondent.) INVERCARGILL. May 23. The stock market has been very quiet during the past week, there being smaller yardings in all classes and values remain much the same as those ruling for some time back. Fat cattle are coming forward in numbers rather in excess of locai requirements and the market is dull for any other than animals of good quality The fat sheep market is well supplied and yardings are keeping well up in this section, with an increase in export schedule. Values have firmed and the market foi both fat lamb and fat sheep is much better than for a considerable time back The store sheep market is very quiet offerings are much reduced, and values have eased to such an extent that prices to-day are lower than for many years. The store cattle market is also quiet with little business being transacted. Fat Cattle.—Prime heavy bullocks, £8 10s to £11; medium do., £6 to £7 10s; prime heavy heifers, £6 10s to £7 10s; medium do., £4 10s to £5 10s; prime heavy cows, £5 10s to £6 10s; medium do.. £3 to £4; vealers, to 30s; runners, to £3 10s. Fat Sheep.—Prime heavy wethers, 13s 6d to 15s; medium do., 10s 6d to 12s: prime heavy ewes, 8s to 9s; medium do. 6s to 7s; lighter do., 4s 6d to 5s 6d; prime heavy lambs, 16s to 18s; medium do.. 14s to 15s; lighter do., Ils to 12s. Store Cattle.—Three and four-yeai steers, £6 10s to £8 ss; two-year do.. £4 15s to £5 10s; yearling and 18 months’ do., £3 to £4; calves, 20s to £1 10s. SOUTHLAND GRAIN REPORT. Oats.—Offerings from growers are coming to hand with rather more frequency, but unfortunately the bulk are just rather under B grade quality. A’s are distinctly uncommon, though earlier in the season deliveries of these were fairly frequent, being from September-sown oats, harvested earlier in the year than was possible with a big portion of the crop which was not sown until November. This position has somewhat hardened our market for grade oats, A’s being worth 2s 104 d, B’s 2s 9d. Undergrade oats, much depending on quality, range from 2s 6Jd for discoloured to 2s 8d for what might be termed somewhat dark B grade, weighing in the vicinity of 421 b per bushel. Chaff.—Little new crop has been offered so far, the later portion of the crop having only been put into stack during last month. At the price which is ruling for local business it is impossible to compete with other centres for the shipping trade. The price being paid to growers for good quality is £3 per ton on trucks, country siding, sacks supplied by buyers. Ryegrass.—There has been a good deal of inquiry by northern brokers for some little time and business has been passing at from 4s to 4s 6d- per bushel, f.o.b. The former price for seed weighing 261b--271b, the latter for 29-301 b, with a variation in price according to germination. This, generally speaking, is low, but nevertheless some germinations have been received well over 80 per cent. Crested Dogstail.—Virtually nothing in the nature of new crop has been offered and it is quite evident nothing of any moment can materialise from this season’s harvest. Anything that is being shown

by growers is of a lighter nature than usual, not altogether discoloured, but by no means attractive. Values are nominally 7d to 74d per lb for machine-dressed seed, f.o.b.

Chewings Fescue.—The crop is now virtually in merchants’ hands. During the last few weeks prices received by growers have increased to a figure much in advance of opening values. Stocks in merchants’ hands are distinctly in small compass, and business between merchants for export has been booked at Is OJd, f.0.b., Bluff. OAMARU MARKETS OAMARU, May 22. A fairly quiet week has been experienced in the grain trade. The bulk of the wheat, has now been delivered to the mills, and as some of the mills are still short of various varieties, millers are much keener to operate on any lines available at 6s 2d for Velvet, 6s Hunters, and 5s lOd Tuscan, f.o.b. The oat market is firm with only moderate offerings. Super A’s are worth 2s sd, A’s 2s 4d, and B’s 2s 2d on trucks, sacks extra. Chaff is worth £3 a ton on trucks, and potatoes £3 on trucks. During the week private sales of stock included: Fat lambs, 6s 6d; fat ewes, ss, 7s; fat wethers, Ils; two-tooth wethers, 13s fid; empty cow. 37s Cd; fat steers, £7 10s; light steers, £6 ss, £6 10s; fat heifers, £5; store steers. £2 17s 6d, £3 10s, £4.
