WAIMEA.
September 11.—The weather has not been quite idealistic for the past fortnight, but I suppose as it is spring no complaints can be made about its changeableness. We had breezes last week that would do credit to Polar regions following immediately j after warm summer weather. However, the grass is benefiting, and paddocks are beginning to look quite green. Lambs are once more arriving on the scene, and so far there have beon few losses. Sowing is becoming general now, and is keeping the farmers going early and late. Dairying.—The local dairy factory is just about completed, and will be ready !o rereive n- " at the beginning of the sens'Vi The re=-:uents of Kaweka have come to the conclusion that this district would! be much improved with a factory, and at a meeting of those interested a short while back a decision to build one was arrived at. The probable site is on Mr Patterson's ground at the bridge on the Waimea Stream. It is expected to be ready for the season 1910. Oddfellowahip.—At the Oddfellow*' Hall. Riversdale, on Wednesday last, was hekl the half-yearly meeting of the Southland District of Oddfellows, Manchester Unity. P.G.M. Bro. J. Henry {Mataura) pressdad, p.nd the meeting was attended by delet?a*es from all parts of Southland. During tne meeting it f • as resolved, "That women can join men's lodges until they can gc-t a lodge of their own." Before ths (.-.inclusion of the meeting Bro. Daw^on, on behalf of the district, presented Bro 12. A. Reid, the Provincial Grand Master uf Southland for the last six months, with an enlarged photograph of himself. Bro. Srn«:il extended a hearty welcome to the delegates to the function to be held in the evening. Concert.—ln connection with "lie ha"fyea/ly meeting of the Southland JJi3trict M.U.1.0.0.F. a concert was held in> the Drill Hall, at which there was a large attendance. Tho programme was quite equal to any previously submitted to a Riversdale audience. The opening item was a violin solo, played by Miss M'lnnes, for which she was heartily encored. A quartet by Misses Maclnnes and Smail and Messrs W. M'Cutcheon and g. Green fol-,
' lowed. "The auld Scotch sangs" was sun| • by Mrs H. Cameron (Dipton), "Bombay * by Mr W. M'Cutcheon, and "Idle word 3 by Miss Smail. The quartet, "Let the hills resound," and as an encore, "Hail, smiling morn," was rendered by Misses Maclnnes and Smail and Messrs W. M'Cutcheon and G. Green. The second ! part of the programme consisted of a very ' amusing farce, entitled "The Area Belle," ! those taking part in it being the Misses Smail and Messrs F. Bayles, J. Black, and C. Henan. On the conclusion of the concert the hall was cleared, and dancing began, fullj 50 couples taking part. The music -was supplied by Miss Smail (piano), G. Rundle (flageolet), and T. Green (violin)* The duties of M.C. were entrusted to Bro. R. M'Lennan. At midnight an adjournment was made to a large marquee, where a dainty repast was partaken of. Dancing was continued till the early morning hours. Literary and Debating Club.—This society held its fortnightly meeting in the Oddfellows' Hall on Monday last. The evening was devoted to a missing-word competition and a mock mayoral election. The winners of the missing-word competition were :—Miss Stephens, 1; Miss Clearwater, 2. The candidate for the mayoralty vere Misses Clearwater and Stephens and Mr Simpson. Mr Simpson's remarks were very idealistic and very impractical. The other aspirants were more practical in their ideas of how 1 to make Riversdale look like a thriving township, Miss Clearwater's being exceptionally so. Mr Simpson was duly elected by a bare majority. The next evening will be devoted to a mock banquet. J
