WANGANUI v. SOUTHLAND. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) INVERCARGILL, September 1.

'j The first representative hockey match bej twoen teams representing Wanganui and j Southland was played on Queen's Park this j afternoon iv the presence of about 500 spectators. The weather, which has been i disagreeably damp for the past few «]av«, hekl off wonderfully, and, but for the •slightest suggestion of a drizzle once or

T twice during the afternoon, was not un1 pleasant. The ground, though probably somewhat heavier than- the playing areas to which th© visitors have been accustomed, and on that account probably affecting their game to come extent, was, all things considered, in remarkably good condition. The Wanganui men as they took the field were apparently a much lighter and younger team than the Auckland representatives who played here last week. The game itself, it may be mentioned, was not such a remarkable exhibition of hockey aa was furnished in the Auckland-Southland match. It was in a general way a contest between the Southland forwards and the Wanganui backs. The Southland vanguard! put up a game much the same as their previous efforts this season,— good in the field, but ineffective in the circle, particularly in the second spell. Chance after chance was lost through faulty fehootimg. A. O. Cave, left full back for Wanganui, played a splendid defensive game, and was invaluable to hie side. On the other hand, Galbraith, right full back for Southland', also put up a magnificent defence, his work in many respects the outstanding feature of Southland's game. Taken all througii, Southland did not play with the same dash as was displayed against Auckland, nor did Wanganui's display convince the spectators that they were on a level with the Auckland team. The game was nevertheless fast and exciting, an interesting circumstance being the lact that whole the visitors secured 4dieir only score within three minutes from the start, the Southland team scored the equalising goal within three minutes from the finish.
