LADIES' INTER-CLUB MATCH. On a ground that held many large pools of^water, anjd in' other respect 6 resembled j a 6oaked sponge, the representatives of j the Chrie'tchurch Ladies' Hockey Club met the representatives of the Dunedin Ladies' Olub at Anderson's Bay on" Wednesday afternoon. With light rain falling, and the i turf in such a condition, the game cold not be called a particularly enjoyable one, but as the- two teams were fairly evemly ' matched, and the players threw themselves heart and sou' into their work, it was not ' ! by any meane an uninteresting game to the | spectators. The following were the teams : i Chrietchurch : Mieses J. Tonks, V. Basi sett, ~N. Rose, L. Robinson, V Rose, H. Nolan, E. Cannon, A. Knight, A. Bruce, O. Simpson, and D. Bowden. Duaiedin : Misses M'Lean, J. Scott, C. ( Easther, Thomson, Robert*, H. Tame, M. Park, D. Gaj-d'ner, Fisher, T. Wyinks, and W Spedding. j I Play centred for a while after the com•mencement of the first spell, Christchurch first becoming conspicuous in an attack initiated by Miss Bruce, centre forward. Dumedin returned, however, and Misses Park, Gard'nen, and Fisher took the ball . right in front of goal, passing the full backs, but the goalkeeper turned the ball j • away. Then Miss Cannon (Christchurch's wing) made a particularly brilliant run 1 right down the field, passing all her opponents, with the- exception of the goal'I keeper. Dunedin attacked again, and yet again, but the visitors' defence was 1 uncompromising, and the Blue-and-white I team, though frequently shooting, could ! make no score. Once, when Miss Park had made one of her invaluable centring strokes, Miss Fisher's shot at the net missed by only a few inches. Then Christchurch snicked the ball away smartly to Dunedin'e end, and with the forwards playing 1 like one girl, made a most determined ' effort to get the ball between ihe posta. . But the shot went wide, and the ball rej turned to midfield. Heie Miss Bruce took charge of it, and set off with a fine run c'own Dunedin's left flank. Mi-s Easther (full back), in attempting to block her progress, slipped en the wet ground and fell, and Miss Bruce passed unchecked, and shot. The ball got past the goalkeeper, and the first score was registered in favour of I Christohurch. Dunedin immediately drove 1 a concerted rush' on to the visitors' backs, but gained nothing, and a hard tussle en- ; sued near the Christchurch goal. Play foll lowed, in which Miss Park showed to considerable ad\antage. Honours were not nearly so even in the second spell. MLss Simpson (Ohristchurch) made a useful run, and passed to Miss Biruce, who. unfortunately, slipped and fell. Dunedin took charge, and rushed play to the visitors'- goal, but Miss N. Rose saved. The next moment Dunedin ' attacked again, ami Miss Wyinks sent in, I a clean, straight 6hot, but jthe goalkeeper turned it in time. Following ~ that there was a long scramble in front of the Christohurch goal, and ultimately Miss Fisher sent the ball into the net, making the score I even. Play still hovered dangerously near the Christchurch base. Miss Park centred smartly, and Miss Fisher again shot, but Miss Tonks saved. Then Ghristchurch conceded a corner, and Mies Fisher was slow in taking a pass that came out to her, an<l lost it. A moment later the ball came to Mies Gardner, who, from a difficult angle, drove it straight into the net. After tnat Chrktohurch managed to break . away. Misses Bruce and Simpson beating both of Dunedin's full backs in succession, and it was only the smartne-ss of Miss Roberta, j who always seemed to be where she was I most urgently needed, that prevented a score. ChristchuTch continued to attack, but were presently placed! on the defensive, and loose, scrambling play ensued near the goal. Suddenly the ball came right across the ground to Miss Spedding, who promptly executed a difficult shot, and scored. A minute or two later, Dune<lin still attacking, Miss Gardner shot from near half-way, and, although the ball stiuck the goalkeeper's stick, it found the net. Shortly afterwards the game ended thus : Dunedin . .„ : i 4 goals. Chrrstchurch -... .. -*-. 1 goal The Rev Mr Shaw was referee.
