AUCKLAND BEATEN BY WELLINGTON. AUCKLAND, September 4.
At V ictoria Park yesterday afternoon, in ±he presence of 4000 spectators, the WeJlin'ton representatives succeeded in wrestinig the New Zealand Hockey Association's championship challenge shield from Auckland, the visitors winning by 3 goals to Z. His Excellency the Governor witnessed the match. The ground played like a billiard , table. At the last moment changee had j to be made in the Auckland team owing I to men being unable to play, andi this seemed to upset the combination. The visitors had the best of the game, and thoroughly deserved their win. There was not a weak spot in the team. Daviee, , the Wellrnigton inside left, played a brillian.fc game, while the defence of the visitors was superb. In the first spell Smith scored for Wellington, and BrookeSmith for Auckland, while in the second half G. Smythe and Davies (Wellington) a.nd Mason (Auckland) secured goals. Mr E. Hay was referee. Thds is Auckland's first defeat on their own g.roumWor three years.
