HAWEA F LAT,
September 2. — Spring has set in unusually early this year, and despite an occasional touch -of frost the growth of ciop3 and pasture generally ie far in advance ni that of ordinary seasons. Cricket Matters. — The annual meeting of the Hawea Cricket Club took place on August 21, a fair number of members being present. Last yea.r'6 officials weie in each case re-elected, and a Works Committee, consisting of the captain, deputyjaptaui, and secretary appointed. Tho balance sheet presented by the secretary (Mr L. Barclay) showed that the finances of the clvb # were in a satisfactory condition, and ' alterations and improvements of tho pitch and ground were authorised. Social. — The annual social under the auspices of the Presbytenian Church was held in .the schoolhouse on the night of tho 27th ult. The Rev. A. V. G. Chandler occupied the chair, and tho attendance constitutes a record for social meetings of thi3- nature at Hawera, large numbers having journeyed from Pembroke, Mount Barker, and outlying districts. As usual the Icbdly assistance of ladies and gentlemen from Pembroke wa3 of material benefit in promoting the success of the entertainment. The Pembroke Church choir, under the leadership of Mr Chandler, claims special mention, the various items being capitally rendered, and received with well-merited appreciation. Regarding all who so cheerfully and willingly contributed to the general enjoyment it is a matter for regret that we cannot have the pleasure of hearing them oftencrr, as where neither skill nor talents are lacking such evenings provide a welcome break in thealmost unvarying monotony of country life. The following gentlemen were unanimously «elected to represent Hawea, on the Church Committee for the ensuing: yeax: — Messrs W. Kiragan, Smith, and TJrquhart. In a pithy speech at the close of the entertainment Mr Kinigan proposed a very hearty vote of thanks to the visitors, to the accompanists (Miss Murdoch and Mi.-.s Barclay), to the ladies of the congregation, by whom the refreshments were supplied, and to all who had assisted towards making th© social the success it had proved.
