HAWEA FLAT.
j August 19. — For the past three weeks the ; weather has consisted mainly of samples, j all of an inferior kind. During the present week we have had a fall of snow on the low country, which vanished almost as i it fell, and has apparently cleared the way for a spell of more settled weather, as to-day was a typical day of early spring. 1 Wedding Tiells. — The marriage of Miss E. Murphy and Mr S. Hansen was solemnised on the 11th inst., the Rev. Father j Hunt officiating. As the bride's parents ■ are very old and well-known residents ot i the district a very large number of friends 1 and well-wishers were present. The catering for the wedding bieakfast. was in the capable hands of Mr T. Tate, of the Hawea Hotel, and the various toasts were proposed and" lesponded to by Messrs Collings, Woods, Murphy, D. M'Lennan, sen., Hansen, Tate, and the bridegroom. The presents were numerous and useful, and the day's festivities concluded with a dance, for which Messrs Connolly and Waide supplied the music. The young couple departed for Cromwell, their future home, on the following day, bearing the good j wishes of all for their happiness and pros- ■ perity. Transport Difficulties.— As the Luggate mills have been unable to de#l with the quantity of ' wheat grown last season, several waggons have 'been fully employed during the winter conveying the surplus to Clyde. As the cost of cartage ranges up to 10|d per bushel, and this without , 1 including railage to Dunedin, it will be seen ho"w heavily the farmer of the interior is handicapped compared with his more fortunate brother within reach of rail and market. A' good deal of grain is still awaiting -transport, and it will be a month or two before the last is cleared away. r Sale. — The property lately owned by Mr J. D." M'Lennan has changed hands, Mr W. Paterson, of Lagoon Valley, being the purchaser. , Ministerial Statements. — Considerable sympathy was expressed for the Hon. R. M'Kenzie on his recent tour, as it was considered that his superiors in the Cabinet had delegated to him an unpleasant task, and one wbicii they themselves had no anxiety to perform The ra-ther pointed inquiry from this district as to the methods ' by 'which the profits of the Otago Central railway were calculated has, so far, failed to elicit the courtesy of a reply. ; i
