ARTHURTON.

August 20. — We have now entered upon • spring. The first two weeks were beauti- , fully mild, and were more like summer | days than spring. August is usually a. bleak, cold month, with broken weather,' and this week is has kept up that reputation. For two days there have been abour four inches of .snow lying all around, and the weather is stili stormy. However, the days are lengthening-, the bud« are sweHing on the trees,, the crocuses and daffodils make the-gar<Jens" quite "gay in sunshiny hours, and in ?.U there is a feeling of spring in th» air. The Farm. — Farm work is well advanced and has been pushed on vigorously of late. I hear the soil is in splendid order, and some of the farmers intend sowing oats i after next week. The turnip crop this year t turned out excellent, and most of the farmers have sufficient to keep their flock ! well on in September. | Death. — A very old and respected resident of the district, in ,the person of Mr Walders passed away at his daughter's residence at McNab on the 31st July. The deceased had been in failing health for some time so the end was hardly unex- ! pected. He was a most kindly and charitable gentleman, and was held in the highest esteem by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. The funeral took place at Waipahi, a very large number attending. The deceased leaves five sons and three daughters to mourn their loss, and general ! sympathy prevails for them in their very ! sad affliction. ' j Scholastic. — The school was reopened last Monday after its usual fortnight's spring holidays. One and all were apparently much benefited by their holiday.
