PONSONBY v. NEWTOWN.
SYDNEY, August 11. The match between Ponsonby and Newtown was played to-day, and" resulted in a win for the former by 14 points to 6. At half time Ponsonbj had scored 9 points and Newtown 3.
Special interest was taken in the match as it decided the club championship of Australasia. The weather dull. The attendance numbered about 8000. Newtown were handicapped owing to the absence of two selected men, who had met with slight accidents diurin-g the* morning, their places being taken by less prominent players. Half way through the second half Booth was disabled, some of his ribs being broken
The visitors showed to better advantage throughout the early part of the- game. M'Gregor,' taking advantage of a mull, scored* a smart try. The visitors- pressed •heavily, and some fine scrum work was v seen. A superb rush ended in Hall getting over. O'Leary failed in both instances to convert. Murray added a third try, and Webb failed to kick a goal. Newtown's only score was a penalty goal, kicked by Russell, to the second spell Newtown added a penalty goal kicked by Russell, and for ■ Ponsonby M'Gregor eeored a good try from a cross kick by Gillett, O'Leary converting, j
The Ponsonby team were passengers by the Mokoia, which sailed for Auckland this evening.
