AMURI SHEEP FAIR.
CHRISTCHURCH. March 5. At the Amuri sheep fair at Culverden 35,346 sheep were offered, and there was a large attendance. The rains had improved the demand, especially for young ewes, but the smaller farmers, having no feed to spare, were unable to purchase to any extent. The bu!k of the sheep went to larger grazers, an Ashburton buyer taking several laige lines. The market was topped by a lot of 2&0O two-tc-oth Lincoln merino ewes, from Mr A. W. Rutherford, jun., Brookdale, which made 28s, and a line of 800 two-tooth three-quarterbred ewes from the same breeder made 23s 2d, the buyer of each lot being W. S. Montgomery, of Little River. The following was the range of prices : — Ewes : Best two-tooth halfbred ewes, 19s 6d to 20s 6d; one special line, to 28s; others, 15s 7d to 17s 3d ; four, six, and eighttooths, 14s 2d to 17s sd; sound-mouth, 9g Id to 15s 9d ; two-tooth three-quarterbrads, 16s 7d to 23s 2d; four, six, end eight-tooths, 13s 2d to 17s 9d ; sound-mouth, 13s 9d to 14s Id ; sound-mouth merino ewes, 7s 9d and 9s 8d; failing mouths. 5s 2d and 5s 4d ; aged, Is 9d to 3s lOd; halfbred wethers, 10s 3d to 12s Bd. Fat and forward wethers brought 15s; halfbred and crossbred lambs, 7s 6d to 8s ; merino, Is 7d to 3s lOd.
