THE HON. MR FOWLDS.

GISBORNE, February 29.

The Hon. G. Fowlds reached Opotiki yesterday, and, having visited 18 public and 20 Native schools, is well satisfied with the cleanliness of the buildings and the children. The sanitarj arrangements in almost every case were found to be excellent. Tests of children in the school syllabus were made with gratifying results. Instruction is being given in such respects as agriculture and woodwork. The_ older girls were dressed in clothes of their own making. The Minister pays a high tribute to the work done by the Nathe teachers. The Minister stated that when the majority in attendance at a school comprised Natives he had no intention of handing them over to the boards. The Minister was much surprised with the farming being done by the Natives, and their enterprise in establishing over 200 miles of a private telephone system was warmly praised. It enabled him to keep in touch with the telegraph system during the whole of his coastal tour. Ho is due at Rotoiua this evening-, at Te Aroha on Tuesday, Waihi on Wednesday, and Auckland on Thursday.
