FIRES.

AUCKLAND, February 18. A •ix-roomed house and outbuildings, to* gether with the contents, belonging to Mr Charles J. Sutton, of Rosebank road, Avondale, were completely destroyed by fire this afternoon. The supposed cause of the outbreak was a defective ohimney. The fire spread to an adjoining house, recently occupied by Mr« Girdlestone. The brigade succeeded in extinguishing the blaze before the second building was totally destroyed. The firs was oaused through the upestting of & kerosene stove, upon which beeswax met turpentine were being melted in & pot. Mr O'Donnell's house wae insured in the Commercial Union office for £700, and the contents, about half of which were destroyed l , were insured in th© South British office for £350. Mrs Girdlestone's house was insured in the Sun office for £500, and the furniture for £300. A fire destroyed a five-roomed house At Inchclutha on the 19th inst,. at about 11 a.m. The house was valued at £190, und was owned by Robert Steele- The house was insured, but for what amount or in what office is not known.
