CHARGES OF ASSAULT
TWO BOYS SENTENCED.
AUCKLAND. February 10.
Two bov=. oach under the ago of 15 — a. Maori and a Lid of European parentage — appeared at the Supreme Court to-d-av for sentence on a charge of assaulting young girls. The Native, Alick Nathan, whose offence was committed at Dargaville, was sentenced to six months' hard labour, with a lecommcndation to the Governor to send him to an industrial selu/i. The other offender. Leslie M'lndoe. still in the Galatea blouse sta^e. came from a respectable family, and had borne an unimpeachable character up till the occurrence. of tl.is offence. Addressing the piisoner, his Honor said: "It is exceedingly painful to have to sentence a boy for a first offence, but if I allowed you to go at liberty I should be holding out to all boys attaining the ago of puberty that they could with impunity commit these crimes on girls and call others to assist, them. But for your tender years I would sentence you to the full term allowed by the law. seven years ; but I shall not do that — I shall sentence you to two years' imprisonment with hard labour, and shall recommend The Governor to detain you in an industrial school.''
