FORTY ONE CHINESE ARRESTED (Fkom Our Own Correspondent.)

Tho police made a raid on alleged gambling premises last evening, and as a result 41 Chinese were arrcetcd on charges of being found in a common gamblinghouse. The appearance of the police in the saloon itself caused a great upioar Fully 50 Chinese were present, many of whom mado a desperate rush for tho money on the tables, while others made for the doors. At one e\it a Chinaman fell, with thg result that several others were brought down at tho feet of a constable, who arrested them forthwith. In the meantime the panic in the salcon had subsided somewhat, not, however, before a number of the men had made good their escape. Th<> remainder were marshalled up and marched to the police station. Then two Chinee merchants were sent for, and with their aid the Chinese were identified and charged. Thcv were subsequently admitted to bail at £5 a head. By 12 o'cloc k this work was completed, and all the Chinese released. The a-ccused were brousrht before the Magistrate's Couit this forencon, and lemandcd till Friday.
