SHIPWRECK RELIEF SOCIETY.
ANXUAL REPORT. The fo'lowhig is the fifth annual report of the Shipvvieck Society of New Zealand piesented to shareholders at the annual meeting-— From the balance she st and statement of accounts it will be seen that the sum oj JEI46 0s 7d was disbursed to shipwrecked crews of various vessels, as against £30 for the previous year. In the case of the barque DundonaW, wrecked at the Auckland Islands the crew, consisting of 15 lianc?s. wore landed at the Bluff by the Government steamer Hmemoa, and prompt offer of assistance was made by the society. In consequence of a local fund being raised at the Bluff and in Invercargill, it was only found necessary to contribute the sum of £32 The other amounts paid repiesentiiig lehef weie to the crews of the Elveiland, "Wai-iti, Kia-Ora Glenlui. and Woollahra. The Executive Committee, during the past year, has been fortunate m interesting the harbour boards throughout the Dominion in the work of the society, and is phased to report that from this source donations weie received amounting to £53 11s. The Duned:n City Council also generous y donated £10. The working expenses of the society 'iave been kept as low as possible, and the genei.il financial position has been considerably improved. The total receipts irom all sources amounted to £451. inclusive of the Government subsidy of £209, in addition to whicn theie is a sum of £74 14& 7d accrued interest on fixed deposits. The total amount o"i fixed deposits now stands at £1839 10s, and theie was to credit ot curient account at 31st December £53 17s lOd. Your executive feels that it is a matter oL sincere congratulation that the society has not had to cope with mauiie casualties of any magnitude, but it wou'd again urgently impress on the public the necessity of further strengthening the funds of the society. It is to be regretted that Mi C. "VT. S. Chamber 1 am, in consequence of his resigning his position >as Collector of Customs, ceases to be ex officio vice-chairman, ilr Chamberlain has always taken a deep interest m the work, and the executive hopes that he will consent to reappointment on the committee, is his advice and assistance have been of great value to the society.
