A MOVE BY THE UNION COMPANY
The Dunedin Wharf Labourers' Industrial Union of Workers, which, in accordance with a resolution passed at a recent meeting, applied for cancellation of its registration as a union, now finds itself checkmated by an unexpected move by the Union Steam Ship Company. The wharf labourers, being rol.oved from registration, and no longer undci the juiisdiction of the Arbitration Act. wculd have been at liberty to strike without fear of punishment. According to the act. it appeaVs that while a dispute is impending no cancellation of reo- -i ration can be permitted. The demands made by the Union Steam Ship Company include the following-.—
Hours of Labour — Fcr ull classes of labour the ordinaiy working hours shall b» from 8 a.m. till 3 p.m exclusive of meal hours (from 12 noon to 1 n.m.) excepf on Saturdays, when they shall ba ficm 8 a. it to 4 pm. -carrying and stowing wcik in freezing chambers aboard ship — ordinaiy time Is 6d. oveitime 2s 6d ; in cool chambers — ordinary time Is 3d, overtime 2s. Leading hands to receive 3d per hour extra.
