CORRESPONDENCE

NOT REQUIRED.

(To the Editor). Sir, —Once again thi- agitation for an extra policeman for Otaki. \ojir correspondent, whom you refer to as an old Otaki resident, was very speedy in stating his desire to engage two policemen—at the country's expense of course. We do not need any sleeping partner policeman to direct another how to carrv out his personal xvi-.Hct although it is just about time one permanent Officer was appointed. The ' whole trouble is for the last two years or more it has been neither one thing or the other. How would school children progress if every few months a. new master was sent along to control them? Admittedly the district, although large, is orderly. A few stones tossed on the roof of houses does not warrant the engagement of a police force, and I feel teruhi your correspondent 'a complaint is only a ls"-;r to satisfv hi- personal feeling, that an appointment should be made. Where would vou find a place the size of Otaki. with five hotels, that the people, including visitors, are as sober and lawabiding. You very seldom hear of a fase or drunkeness in our local Court. I- thi- a «ign th&t another policeman is required ? Rubbish! One conscientious man can do the work if permanently appointed, instead of sending first one and then another along, wince apparently gives us the impression they . are only on holiday shift.—l am yours j V. H. BOWDEN. I Otaki.
