BREACH OF SCAFFOLDING ACT.
Mr. J. L. .Stout, S.M.. presided over the sitting of the Magistrate's Court at Palmerston North on Monday. The Inspector of Scaffolding, Mr. G. McKessar. of Wanganui. proceeded against F. Needham, of Palmerston North, alleging a breach of the Scaffolding Act in that, defendant failed to notify the inspector of his intention to erect a building 24 hours before the work commenced. Mr. W. A. Ball, for defendant, pleaded not guilty, stating that the scaffolding of the structure in question was less than 2 feet high, and therefore, he submitted, did not come within the scope of the measure. The inspector pointed out that there had been recent additions to the Act, and, having regard to the effect of r(hesc, notification should (have beer, given. His Worship entered a conviction and fined defendant £1 and costs 17s. He refused to allow the inspector further travelling expenses, that he saw no reason why people at Palmerston North should be obliged to pay these simply becaus'c the inspector was located as far distant as Wanganui.
