OBITUARY.

FREDERICK WILLIAM SWIFT.

Mr F. W. Swift, a well-known local identity who has been connected with the Otaki Railway book-stall for the past three years, died very suddenly at Otaki on Monday evening. The late Mr Swill, after business, went tor his ustil evening walk at about 8 o'clock. returning to the Railway Hotel, where he stayed, at about !' p.m. He became suddenly ill. and the two local doctors were immediately sent for. Dr. Atmore arriving on the scene shortly after being called. Mr Swift lingered for a few minutes and then passed quietly awtiv, death being due to heart failure.

The deceased, who was very popular and highly esteemed, was born in London in 1850, and five years later came to Xew Zealand, landing at Auckland. He lived there for some sixteen years, during which time he learned the printing trade. He then went, to Wellington, where he resided for sonic •!-! years. during which time he worked at the "Evening Post" and at the Government Printing Office, where he was '•Father of the Chapel." He was also President of the Typographical Union. Tie- late Mr Swift th'-ii retired and came to Otaki to live, but desiring something to pass away the time he took over the bookstall at Otaki Kailway, where he made hosts of friends by his genial nature. Mr- Swift died some three year- ago. while one son was killed IS or 19 yours ago. Those left to mourn their loss are Mr William Swift (Wellington), Mr- 1-1. Creed (Monakau), Mrs W. Dysart (Wellington) and Mrs W. Hartung (Pohangina). The late Mr Swift underwent an

operation two years ago. but otherwise has enjoyed splendid health, tie was in hi- u.-ual health on Monday, and therefore his death caused a very painful sensation.

The funeral took place today at Katori. the procession leaving his daughter's residence in Parliament Street. The relatives of the deceased, who

have received numerous sympathetic messages from various places, have the sympathy of all local and district residents.
