OTAKI SURF CLUB.
A meeting of the above Club was held at the Otaki College last uigiit. Present: Messrs Wills. Mosley. P. Tiihiwi, Cotterell, Evans. Heald and Baker. A rough estimate of receipts and expenditure in connection with the recent carnival promises a balance of about £2O towards the Club’s funds.
Votes of thanks were passed to the ladies’ committee and other helpers and subscribers; to Mr Ralph Smith, of Wellington, for his assistance in instructing the teams, and to Mr and Mrs Cotterell for receiving Mr and Mrs Bmith free of charge at the kiosk for the week.
A trophy from Messrs Bills and Moore for the most improved club member was awarded by Mr .Smith to Jack Riwai, of the Otaki College. For the benefit of the geneial public it was decided to state the objects of the Otaki Surf Club which are two: (1) To save life when possible ou the Otaki bench; (2) To instruct in swimming and lifesaving as many people as possible, so
that whenever the occasion should offer. such trained persons would be
enabled with confidence to attempt a rescue, and would possess the knowledge necessary to restore a patient
to consciousness. It is the intention of the Club, v. hen the number of trained men is sufficient to provide, during the swimming season. J at least two men each Saturday and j Sunday on the beach in ease of drowning accidents —-two men being ail that are absolutely necessary to use the reel with success. There seems a chance of securing a Club room tu the beach for the coming season, and Messrs Evans, Heald and the Secretary were appointed a committee to provide ways and means, the other members agree- | ing to supply whatever labour is neces- ! sary. _ _ 1 ! The question of swimming baths for Otaki was discussed, but action was! deferred pending certain enquiries which are first to be made. Members were satisfied with the performance of their team during the oar nival, and full confident that the splendid surf on the bench, with ability of the Otaki young men. will together be the means of producing some very . good teams in the future. It was further decided to make a special effort nest spring to scud up a large number of candidates for the Royal Life-Saving Society's bronze medallion, thereby establishing the Club on a sure foundation. The meeting was adjourned with a hearty vote of thanks to the chair.
