OTAKI’S WATER WORKS.

MEN DISCHARGED. At the special meeting of the Otaki Borough Council last night Cr. Bills said complaints had been made to him of local men being “ sacked ” from the water-works 7 job, and outsiders kept on. The Chairman took exception to men making complaints to Councillors, pointing out that all complaints should be made to the Clerk, and then if they were not satisfied to wait on the Council. Cr, Bills said the men had said they were sent to him by the Clerk. The Clerk explained that he had told them to go to the Council —not to Councillors. Cr, Taylor said he understood the men were making a rumpus because tliev were given no reasons for being dismissed. Cr. Carkeek said he believed some men were discharged and others put in their place, but in answer to this the Alayor said there was no foundation for such a statement. He considered the Council should not interfere with the Clerk and foreman. Cr. Broadway said men discharged should be told the reason of dismissal. The Alavor and Cr. Cockrell agreed, while the latter spoke highly of one man who had been di.-charged. The Alavor said men had been put. ofi‘ on account of curtailment of work and special men engaged for special purposes. If men had a grievance they had the j right to lay it before the Council. It was decided that the men diseharg- | ed be allowed to discuss the matter with the Clerk and Cr. Carkeek to-night (Friday) at 5.30.
