OBITUARY.
Mr 0. F. Attmore"recently .receiyed news of the death of his aged grandmother, Mrs Margaret Steele, at Wellington on Friday last. We reproduce a report appearing in the "Dominion "j of the passing of a pioneer:—The passing away of Mrss Margaret Steele at | her residence in Majoribanks Street,. Wellington, at the age of 83 years, marks the departure of one of Welling-1 ton's early and much respected citizens. ' A woman of undoubted human syrupa-' 1 thy and kindness- she endeared herself to all who knew her, and she died loved and honored by a wide circle of * relatives and friends. The late Mrs Steele wus born at Omagh County, Tyrone, in June, 1840, and in 1861 she j went out to Victoria, Australia, where [
she was married to James Thomas Steele, son of Dr. and Mrs Steele, D.D., Stranaiar County, Tyrone, and brother of Professor W. J. Steele, St. Peter's Cambridge. Mr and Mrs Steele came to New Zealand in IS7B I and took up their residence in Wellington. Mr Steele, who predeceased the late Mrs Steele in 1885, was a very prominent mason, both in Victoria and in Wellington, and was W.M. of Maldon Masonic Lodge, in 1872. He was aleo an enthusiastic soldier, holding the rank of captain in the old Wellington Rifles. Both Mr and Mrs Steele were active members of St. John's Church, and latterly the late Mrs Steele was closely associated with Kent Terrace Presbyterian Church. The last'funeral rites were conducted by the Rev, Dr. Kennedy Elliott, assisted by the Rev. , J. Baird, and the deceased lady was laid to rest in Sydney Street cemetery, on Sunday morning. There were many beautiful wreaths. The late Mrs Steele is survived by seven children, i fifteen grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. I
