SOLDIERS’ FARMS.
Mr Field (Otaki) has a.-ked the Minisier of Lands, whether he would state what is the intention of the Government in eases where a soldier’s farm, under mortgage to the Crown, is sold under power of sale and fails to realize a sufficient price to cover the liability to the Crown: and whether the soldier could have the liability hanging over his head for years, perhaps for the remainder of his life, or be forced to take advantage of the Bankruptcy Act in order to terminate such liabilitv?
The Hon. Mr. Guthrie (Minister of Lands) replied: —“"When the Government exorcises its power of sale, and there- is a deficiency on such sale, it is not the practice or intention of the Government to hold such deficiency
against a returned soldier, but to write off. Exception, however, is made in a ea;e where it is fairly evident fraud
meat reserves to itself the right to follow up the matter with the view to ascertaining whether distraint can be made on any other property belonging to tc 6 goiter, the same to be applied towards rb# deficiency in question.
