OTAKI-TARARUA TRACK.
APPLICATION FOR ASSISTANCE. The following letter has been sent to the Hun. Minister of Tourists and Health Resorts: —“In order to provide at least an emergency shelter on the most dangerous and exposed part of the track, our Club has purchased sufficient material for the construction of a small hut measuring 6ft. x Bft., and with the co-operation of tlic Otaki Committee and others interested, have been enabled to have this material packed up to the site near Mt. Hector. On Dominion Day week-end a further party from our Club proposes to proceed there and erect the whare. The of the material fur this hut, which was borne by our Club, was about £2O, but this to gethc-r with the expenses of the party (number about 40) and the value of the voluntary labour expended in the transport of the sections would amount to a considerable sum. This hut, although small, will serve to accommodate in an emergency (bad weather or accident) a party of from 6 to S persons, and will also prove of value to the party who construct the "Government hut. In view of the foregoing we trust you will be enabled to induce the Government to make sufficient funds available for expenditure this year to erect the permanent central hut and construct the bridge over the Tau-he-renikau river, thus making the track comparatively safe for the ever increasing number or tourists who traverse the Tararua range." Secretary. Tramping Club.
