WAR CLOUDS.
TURKISH TROOPS MARCH ON ISMID. PLAN'S FOR DEFENDING NEFTIt-AL ZOX LS. RUSH TO THE COLOUR*. A few days ago the situation in the Near Last was described as obscure and although events have followed events rapidly since then the issues remain rather clouded. That the position is intensely grave is plainly indicated by the British Government’s Empire-wide appeal l'or troops. Monday night As cablegrams brought news of a Turkish military move ill the direction of Ismid, s<i miles east of Constantinople, but whether special significance can be attached to tlris can only be shown by confirmatory advice. Alcan while the British and Allied forces in the neutral zones are being strengthened and entrenching operations arc being carried out at Chanak.
Probablv the most noteworthy feature of the cables is the severe attacks on the British policy bv the French Sind Italian Press, the latter of which is openly svmpa thetic towards the Turks.
The British Government’s appeal has met with a splendid response throughout the Empire. In New Zealand there has been a spirited rush to the recruiting offices.
