OTAKI BULB SHOW.

1 A PLEASING DISPLAY. ' That Otaki and district can grow . bulbs and other flowers was fully ovi- ' deuced yesterday, when the annual disI play, under the auspices of the Otaki Horticultural and Daffodil Society, was I held. The theatre was effectively sot ; out with a gorgeous show of io vely j bulbs, and other cut blooms, and was I made all tlie more attractive by ox- ' hit,its from leading nurserymen, Mes- | srs H. Poole, F. AVcstbury, and .Jos. j AVeighlninn competing in the leading i classes, while Mr A. J. Blunter and Air I W. G. Bond had nice displays of blooms I for exhiliition only. Messrs A. 11. Bur- | gess, \V. It. Reynolds, if. Witehell, A. W. Bills, \V. .1. Bummers, A. \V. Broadway, G. Bramley, and ii. Cockrell were all well to the fore, and tlieir . exhibits elicited keen competition. M.r A. J. Blunter, who judged tlie novice class, cottage garden, and tlie miscellaneous section, was, very pleased wit li

the display, considering tlie exhibits ot a high order and equal to oilier shows [ that he luid attended. All exhibits were of ail even nature, and taken all through would take beating. Air Buckingham, who has judged for the past live years at Otaki, was delighted with the exhibits that he judged. Not only were the entries numerically strong, but the blooms were splendid and competition very keen, there being only n point difference for the prize. In the open class Messrs Ilobbs, I’oole, and AVestbury shared honours, but Mr Poole had the honour of winning Mr H. Witehell’s trophy, which now becomes his own. The champion nontrumpet (R. J. Seddon) was a lovely one and greatly admired, and Mr Wesfbury is to be commended for staging such a glorious bloom. The champion trumpet, a New Zealand seedling, was, however, staged by Mr H. I’oole. The bloom was a magnificent one, and certainly deserving of the prize. Mr W. H. Reynolds, in tlie amateur class, had some splendid exhibits, and secured the championship with -T. G. Weightman (a N.Z. seedling, his own growing). He also secured Mr Witehell’s trophy with liis trumpets (three varieties), the silver and bronze medals for seedlings, Mr J. P- Brandon’s trophy for (lie points’ prize and Mr Buckingham's trophy. His success was well deserved. Air A. W. Bills also did well in the novice class, and is lo be commended, this being his first year in the field.- Air Buckingham considered the cut flowers, as a whole, very line, and despite the fact that the show was a. week or two late, considered it equalled any show where he had judged. I’eliding, he thought, was its only rival. The amateur class, he pointed out, was a big improvement on previous year-, and he predicted that some of the Otaki amateurs would soon be budding professionals and competing in open classes. He spoke highly of the display of anemones, pansies, hyacinths, tind other blooms, alt of which went to make the show an attractive and successful one. The committee responsible for the show are deserving of kudos for the successful way in which it was managed, while to Air S. Norgrove (secretary) special praise is due. The tea-rooms —thanks to Misses

AA'hitcman and Baker —were aldy supervised. while Mrs Reynolds and Mrs!-, Nieolson good business at their . weeds stall. i In the evening there "as again a fair attendance and great interest "as ; displayed, while the Otaki Brass Baud enlivened proceedings by choice selec- , tions. Bag-pipe music l.«y Mr Cameron was also appreciated. Among the blooms for exhibition only was a XX «acdliug. Lcedsii. grown - by Mr J. G. Weigh* man, of leildiug, and named Mrs 11. Witehell. It was a - niee bloom and well-named. Among those who assisted in the tenrooms were Misses Dorothy Smith, | Doris and Mary Webby. Freda Xasli. . Ethel Whiteman, Connie Evans and Mr Minton. Misses Baker and 'Whiteman, who were in charge, are grateful to all uho sent cakes and otherwise assisted. Following is the prize list: — OPEN CLASS. Stewards: Messrs W. J. Summers, A. W.
