EXCITEMENT AT A CARNIVAL. ■\.s was expected, the challenge | thrown down by Mr Isherwood (late of j OtakiT to effectively handcuff Mr Los | Scott, otherwise “Hardeen. the Hand- j cuff King.' ! drew a large crowd at the j Returned Soldiers ’ Carnival at Levin. , Sir Scott his a reputation on the pro- ; fessional platform, and in his travel* j in all parts of the world has not yet : met his master. Mr Isherwood was j known to have some experience in man- j ipulating the ‘ * bracelets,' ’ and he was j quite confident of tying the genial j il Scotty ” in a knot that he had nut | before encountered. About 5.30 the j principals appeared on the stagp. and j Mr Isherwood set about his task, using four pairs of handcuffs and 10ft. of chain to secure his man, (me pair being applied to the upper part of the : arms, an other to the legs, a third to the ! wrists, and a fourth to link tip the chain. The arms wore handcuffed behind the subject’s back. This work occupied no less than 14 minutes, and when the chain was applied and linked up to tho handcuffs, “Hardeen” looked like a well-trussed fowl. He was then given the chance to uphold his reputa- ! tion as the handcuff king and free himself or forfeit his wager. I After a screen had been placed round,
I Mr Scott got to work like a tradesman, i The excitement of the crowd increased { as the minutes grew, but when at last ! “the Handcuff King” emerged to the * stage free of all his fetters, cheers I broke out from all over the building. 1 and continued tor several minutes. Kk- ’ haps' in all hi; varied experience; Mr j Scott has not had a mpr« flattering rei ceptiar. than he received that nigh.. The time occupied in getting rid of his I‘ r ironmongery” ■ was Jimp minute*. which is regarded a; being a very good j performance.
