HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Council was held yesterday. Present: Crs. H. D. Atkinson (chairman), John Barclay, A. I. Mackay, A. R. Edwards, J. Whiteman, and 11. Foley. Inspector’s Report. The Inspector (Mr Cudby) reported that lvapiti Road bridge at I’araparaumu had been completed, and that 123 feet of concrete kerbing had been put in position fronting the Paekakariki Hotel, ami the road fronting the property improved. A culvert just north of Mr S. Smith’s (Paekakariki) needed re-covering with stronger timber, and recommended it bo renewed with S x 4 jarrah. It would require 447 ft. to cover. The Karapnti bridge at Aka tarawa had been improved, while various roads in the Mitngaroa Valley had been attended to. About 430 ft. of timber was required for repairs to culverts on tho swamp road at Waimii-o-mata. also 050 ft. for repairs to decking of several bridges in the same riding. He suggested the Council purchase necessary iron girders from the P.W. Department, with a view to expediting tho reconstruction of Patrick's bridge at Aka tarawa. —Adopted. Ranger’s Report. The ranger reported that during the mouth he had impounded two head of cattle, released two, and intended to prosecute two owners.—Or. Whiteman expressed surprise at tho few eat tie impounded, and pointed out that many head of cattle could often be seen oa the roads. —Received. Paekakariki Water-Works. Mr Laing Meason reported that he had paid his linnl visit to the water- ■ works at Paekakariki. The work was now complete, the water served 130 houses, whiln there were miles of mains. During the progress of the work forty days were lost through bad weather and holidays. The pressure, he added, was liOlbs. to the square inch. The fire brigade plant was complete, and guide posts had been erected: the cost for the fire plant was £2OO. The whole work cost £5317. including first year’s interest. He thanked Mr Mackay for valuable help given, and congratulated the residents of Paekakariki on having such splendid water-ser-vice.—Decided to thank Mr Laing Meason for his satisfactory work, and Cr. Mackay for help given, and to dispute a claim from Mr lioltom relative, to his horse and cart. It had been stated the dray was a new one bul Or. Mackay said he had reason to believe it was purchased in Levin twenty years ago. Materials in connection with the wa-ter-works cost £3920, labor £745, cartage £57, rail freight £B. land survey £7. engineering fees £3ll, less sale of pipes £BB, interest and sinking fund £302. Correspondence. Correspondenca was read and dealt with as follows: From State Advances Department, requesting the ratepayers’ consent before the Department could ••murrain the Raumati drainage board.—Petition to be circulated. From Slate Advances Department giving directions re procedure of Ante- . cedent Liability Loan (£XQO O). —Necessary arrangements to be made. From -State Forest Service, requesting a return of all buildings «reeted in the County for the last twelve months. —Decided to reply stating it unable to oblige. From Waimea County Council, re distribution of lyre-tax money. —Received. From Wellington City Council relative to Sir Arthur Pearson Memeriti fund.—Decided to open a list. From Manawatu Bluestone Otiarry Co., relative to damage done at Paekakariki, and offering to replant trees destroyed by them. —Decided to make application for the money. Mhscallanecufl. CT. Foley stated that at the cemetery a disgraceful state of affairs had existed, and that body upon bodyhad been buried, and graves otherwise interfered with. He moved a grant of £25 be made to the Taita CemeteryBoard, and thus help to alleviate the trouble. The matter of acquiring more land was under consideration, but £6OO was asked for 23 acres. There had been no survey of the burial ground, plots needed setting out, and the ground, generally, put in order. The cemetery, was practically full, and the funds would not allow of a sexton to be kept. The Clerk said £lßl 11s 3d w as paid 'he sexton last year, while the revenue w as £l9O. ! Cr. Foley considered 100 to 150 bodies had to be carried up the face of clay faces, greatly to the discomfort of bearers. The motion was seconded by Cr. Barclay and carried.
