PAEKAKARIKI NOTES.
A tew days ago two young men, brothers, who were at one time inmates of the Weraroa Training Farm, paid a , midnight' visit to no less than six different residences. Mr J. Smith’s kitchen was entered and the intruders helped themselves to everything’ that was good in the way of food. A watch that was in a coat pocket was also taken. The outhouses of Messrs Horo King, Clothier, Tilley, Packer, Ely and Harris were also entered and trifling things taken, such us razors, boots, bike pump, etc. At Mr Ham 7; all Ms-ripe tomatoes were taken. The offenders were eventually captured at Pahautanui by Constable O ’Donnell of -Johnsouville. Owing to tho long spell of dry wea- j ther a water famine existed in Paeka- j kariki until the situation was relieved last Saturday, when the water was Uuiied into the main. Several residences are already connected up. The need of a patrol on the Paeka,-
kariki beach when bathers are in the
water was much in evidence a few Sundays ago when Mr W. Kelly and his two sisters got into diflieul:ies. Mr Kelly, when interviewed, stated that tin undercurrent tippeared to catch them and take them into deep water, and had it not been for the postmaster and his assistant, who were bathing with them, tho result may have been serious, as Mr Kelly and his sisters were brought to safety before the arrival of the Surf-Club members. This is a matter for serious consideration, as had there not been a meeting in tho Sui f Club it is quit possible there would have been no Surf Club mem- ' bers on the beach to effect a rescue. Mr MeOuirk, tho local hotel-keeper, is giving uji the hotel about the end of this month. Mr Kennedy, of Wellington ,is taking over tho lease. 'J'lie annual school picnio was to be held at Paraparaumu, but owing to the Railway Department being unalrte to supply travelling accommodation on a convenient train, the idea had to V-» abandoned. Mr f rank Smith ami Mr 11. Lynch collided while motor-cycling near the Paekakariki school on Saturday night, the bikes were badly smashed, but the riders escaped with a severe shaking.
