MOUNT HECTOR TOURING CLUB.
PROGRESSIVE PROPOSALS. A meeting of the above Club was held at Greyfown on Friday night. Mr D. P. Loasby was in the chair, and quite a large number of members were present. It. was resolved that the secretary write to the Minister of Public AVorks, through the member for the district, urging the erection of the Mount Hector hut, and increasing the size of Mount Alpha hut; also to see what can be done regarding the bridge over the Tauherenikau river. The secretary is to write to the Defence Department and see if they will grant some two dozen collapsible stretchers that can be used in the huts on the track. Regarding a letter from Otaki Club suggesting that they put a hit up at "The Forks," Otaki, this club thought that was a local matter for Otaki to deal with, as Greytown is going to erect a hut on its reserve near Bassett's whare. Messrs Loasby, Brooks and Bassett were elected a committee to choose the site for the hut. Mr Bassett was authorised to clear the track. as far as Mount Alpha hut to enable horse traffic' to that place. There are some very large trees that have fallen across the track, and a horse can neither be got over nor around them pf present. Mr Bassett is also" to repair the bunks iii several whares en route. • Regarding the above improvements, which will be somewhat expensive, and will also be beneficial to the Wellington and Otaki Clubs, they are to be asked to assist in the cost of the work. It was decided to ask Mr Frank AVall if he would allow his donation £IOO to be used towards the erection of a hut on the club's reserve in the Waiokine A r alley. x This forecasted work means that the club is carrying out an expensive programme, and it is trusted that trampers generally, and others that are interested in mountaineering, will send donations to the secretary to help cover costs. Relative to the new huts required, it was further resolved that a copy of the resolution be sent to AVellington and Otaki clubs asking that they get the several M.sP. interested to present the petition conjointly, and point out the importance of the -work recommended from a life-saving point of view. It so happens that the only two accidents that have happened havo been with parties coining from Otaki to Greytown, thus showing the urgency of the works suggested, and .the necessity of a club whare - at .Waidhine,.. where rescue material can be stored.-
