Howell: Messengers: YV. Hurren, G. Howell, L. W. Ho v, ell. The "Springbok" meeting, held at I'araparauuui on Wednesday was, despite the tact that there was no holiday, a great success. The weather was line, the ai tendance satisfactory, while all arrangements, thanks lo a capable committee, very complete. On several occasions the judges had difficulty in placing the first and second men, SO close Were, linishes. Refreshment booths were capably supervised, while ill's Vratley put on an excellent spread for ike officials ami others. The Otaki Brass Band played several line selections during the day. The appearance ,of the Springboks, Kinsman and Johnston, however, proved the main attrac,tioi>, and these two athletes put up very line performances, although in most cases they were too heavily handicapped. Following are the results:— 120 Yards Hurdles.—First heat: Rangi Nicholson, scr., 1, R. A. Buchanan, owes 12 yds, 2, E. G. Brazier, owes 10 yds, 3. Only starters. AVon comfortably. Time 19 4-5 sec. One Mile. —A. Greig, 95 yds, 1; AV. G. Hayward 2. E. Weggery also started but failed lo iinish. Greig ran a splendid race, and finished a yard ahead of Hayward. This was a good race, and the two first men breasted the tape almost together. Time 52sec. Nail-Driving: G. Baueke 1.
At the finish of the events Mr Len Howell thanked all for their attendance and called for cheers for the Springboks, after which. Mr R. Maclean (president) presented the trophies. In doing so he expressed his pleasure at seeing the' visitors present, wished them "success, and hoped when they left home would carry fond recollections of New Zealand. "For They Are Jolly Good Follows" was then sung. The South Africans were then called upon for speeches, and both Messrs Johnston and Kinsman expressed pleasure at being present, stating they had thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and that it had been no disgrace to be beat-
Mr Davies, President of the N.Z.A.A. A., also ipoke, and said that when the meeting was first mooted for Paraparauntu he was not sanguine as to its result, looking upon Paruparaumu a 3 being in the backblocks. He had 'nowchanged his mind, was delighted to see the sports such a cuccesa, and would, with pleasure, dp'what he could iokelp
future meetings. - He referred to the Springboks as fine fellows, and although top-notehers they did not suffer with swelled head. Before dispersing the Springboks gave an exhibition of changing the stick in a relay race, and points were gained by local competitors who arc likely to compete at Palmerston N. NOTES. During the stay of the Springboks in Paraparnumu they, with Mr Davies, I were the guests of Mr R. Maclean, and I on Tuesday evening were entertained I at a convivial evening, and on AVcd- i nesday morning taken for a motor ride I to AVaikanae and district. On AVcd- j nesday night they were entertained by Mr and Mrs AV. J. Howell. ! Among interested spectators at the | gathering was Mr T. Parata who had ' made a big endeavor to get the Springboks at AVaikanae, and who later had assisted iii securing then! for Paraparauinu. ' | Among the hardest workers on the j ground were Alessrs J. Barnett (secre- ! tary) and E. Clarke. They were ably; assisted by Messrs Leu Howell, J. M. Irving and others. A pleasing feature, and an import- ' ant one on the programme, was the catering by Mrs Pratley for the Springboks. Club officials -and press. The spread was a splendid one, and much praise was bestowed on Mrs Pratley for the ''banquet" provided. The thanks of the Club are extended : to the members of- tho Otaki Brass Band lor services rendered gratis. The ' music, was fully appreciated by all. , ' The sheep-guessing competition cansed keen interest. Tho actual live weight was 17211b5. Mr Korpa Hawea (Otaki) proved the winner with 1581 lbs. The dead weight was 941b.5. Mr j R. Maclean was the winner, guessing | the correct, weight. j i
