LITERARY AND DEBATING CLUB.
••WIND-UP” SOCIAL. The Otaki Literary and Debating Club's social held at the Druids’ Hall 01l Monday night lust was u fitting finale to a most successful and enjov ablc session. There was a large attendance, the accommodation of the hall being taxed to its utmost. Thanks 10 the energy aud enthusiasm shown by a small committee of ladies, an excellent bill of fare was presented, and tliei ' was not. a dull moment during the evening. The programme opened wit a a comedietta, entitled “April Fools, in which the characters were tala u by Messrs W. H. Wills, 8.A., and r. Tahiwi, aud Master Thos. Tail (one o* the Native College lads). The performers got well into the humour ot the play, keeping things going exevlcutly right to the finish, and acting their parts splendidly. A special wo.-I of praise is due to Master Tait, who filled liis somewhat difficult part mo--creditably for a youth of his year:. The little play was a great success,
and keenly enjoyed by all. Next came a few choice musical items, nil much appreciated. Messrs gable and Willacc D’Atli each contributed three songs, scoring . welldeserved encores for their artistic renderings. Miss Simcox also sang mo-t pleasingly, and Mr Frank Penn contributed three musical monologues. The musical programme was arranged by Mrs Stable, who proved an adept and sympathetic accompanist. The Ihird part of the evening’s entertainment was a playet, which was carried out most successfully, ant created roars of laughter throughout. The performers, Mrs W- H. Mill. Misses Kirk and Edmcd, and Messrs Stahlc and 0. H. Fisher, all showed themselves possessed of considerable ability in stagecraft, and the audience was delighted with the whole performance. which was really most creditable and effective.
At the conclusion of the program-.! the Rev. G. F. Petrie. M.A. fpresiden of the club), returned thanks to th performers who had provided such a enjoyable entertainment, and also th ladies responsible for the arrangi meats for the social. Mr Petrie :•!- referred briefly to the work of th session just closed, saying it had bee a most successful oik*, and he wishc to heartily thank all who had assist" him in the discharge of his duties a president. The president said he to; sidcred the Club was undoubtedly on of the most valuable in the district and was doing a very fine work. An appetising supper was harideround, after which the floor cleared, and a number of the ytnni people remained for a short dance.
