HOCKEY.
' lIUIA (WELLINGTON) V. OTAKI. i This match, played at Karori Park j on Saturday, created a deal of interest, and proved a hard-fought and I well-contested game. The ground. although slippery on account of recent I rain, was in good order, being fast and i reliable. In the first half the game i was 2—l in favour of Wellington, and I with seven minutes to call of time in j the second half the score was 3 —l. j From a forward rush, however, Gidi dens passed to Ayre. who scored, and I shortly afterwards the former scored a line goal from a difficult angle, and thus equalised matters. The otherscore was' credited to Satherley, who forced a Wellington player, with the result that the latter knocked the ball into the net. Hailwood and Iveys (2) scored for Wellington, the first goal being a single one through Otaki ! goalkeeper speculating and missing. ; The other two goals were the outcome ' of fine combined play. | Messrs Wallace (Wellington) and ," Nicolson (Otaki) were referees. 1 After the match the visitors were j royally entertained at dinner at Astor i House, and an excellent repast was | done full justice to. At a suitable inl terval Mr Butcher, on behalf of the I Htria Club, extended to the Otaki boys i a warm welcome, congratulated all j players on their manly and sportsman- : like attitude on and off the field, and j spoke highly of the referees, referring j to them ns being the best of sports as J well as first-class arbitrators of a game /that was rapidly increasing in popularity. Mr Nicolson. as manager of 1 the visiting team, thanked the Welj lington boys for their kind expressions and their great hospitality, and ! expressed a hope that the teams would j again shortly meet to decide on the | conqueror —each side having won a j match, while no less than three had \ been drawn. Cheers were then exchanged. At the invitation of the Wellington boys the visitors were afterwards taken to Fuller’s Vaudeville Co., and later entertained at supper. A most convivial time was spent by all. and the Otaki players will long look back with pleasure to their trip. The Wellington lads and their supporters did all possible to make the stay an enjoyable one, and were certainly successful in their efforts, ) During the evening Messrs Keys. Butcher, and Hawker, of the Huia Club, were presented with trophies for play during the season, while Mr Guy (runner-up for one trophy) was commended for his season’s display, he ' only losing the prize by a toss of a
It is probable that a hockey tournament will be held at Otaki on Labour Day (25th inst.) If so support is expected to be forthcoming from Wellington, Fcilding, Pjiirfitirston and Levin, as well as from three or four teams in Otaki.
