PRICES IN AMERICA.
Mr Wro. Blyth, of Opunake, has just returned from a~nine months' tour «f America with the Chauauqua. Spoak-
. g to the local paper, Mr Blyth said that prices of all commodities in America wert> sky high. • Sugar was !,eing retailed in Xew York in March ast at 8d per lb, and in Vancouver at i per lb. Meat was also very dear.
ml not nearly as good quality as the Xew Zealand article. An ordinary tailor made suit of clothes cost from £.17 upwards, whilst foodstuffs of all descriptions were much dearer than in ie«- Zealand. Despite the tremendous . nsl of living the people seemed to have plenty of money to spend on amusements and dress. This, of courne, vas accounted for by the high wages prevailing. As elsewhere the housing problem in America was a most acuta line, it being estimated that in the city u£ New York alon* there wore 75,00f> houses short of requirements. "There is in America at the present timo," ,aid Mr Blyth, "strong evidence of iiad feeling between the American people and the British, the former regarding Britain as a bankrupt nation. This hostile feeling is being greatly engendered by the Hurst newspapers. The radical papers all over America arc extremely hostile to Britain, They desire thai New York be regarded as •he financial huh of the world, and are, in this connection, very jealous of London."
