CRACK SHOTS AND DRIVES
There has been a good deal of discussion lately as to the length of s. drive off the tee at golf, and it has been now proved by the dint of careful measurement that two hundred yards is a very good drive, and that i; is only the crack plsyer» who can '■over tho two hundred and Jiffy vards.
Even two hundred »nd fifty yards is, however, a very long distance, ind just about twice as far as even the best of us can throw a cricket ball. On» hundred and forty yards is th« record distance for throwing a cricket ball. A competitor in the Olympic iporti has thrown a javelin just over two hundred and eleven feet.
All these distances are nothing to what can be dene with the mechanical aid of the bow. In one of his book» Conan Doyle describes how an areh»r, "►retching his bow by mean* of ht» 1oe«. shot an arrow to t gigantic distance. But enly a few year? ago Mr Simon, pulling his bow in rh» ordintry way, succeeded in shooting an arrow to a distance of four hundred and fiftynine yards, or well erer a quarter of 2. mile."
A stone can be sect a very long distance by means of a sling, hut not more than thr«» hasdred yerd;.
