PAEKAKARIKI POST OFFICE.

OPENED ON SATURDAY. A long-felt want in Paekakariki has at last been supplied through the opening of the new post office, there on Saturday last. Paekakariki has a fairly large residential population, while it is steadily forging to tho front as a seaside resort. For years past the need of suitable post office buildings has been sorely felt, henco the opening of the new building was naturally the occasion of much rejoicing.

The formal opening was made by the Postmaster-General (Hon. ,1. G. Coates), who congratulated the town on tho improved accommodation provided. He mentioned that the first post office was opened at Paekakariki in ISfiD. In those days the mail coach from Wellington ran through Packakariki to Wanganui. The journey was almost. entirely along tho beach. In later years, of coarse, the mails have been conveyed by train. Mr Coates said that the growing importance of Pnoknkariki fully justified the erection of the new post office. Mr W. H. Field, M.P., member for the district, also made a few appropriate remarks. The new building is commodious, well built and convenient, and comprises post office and postmistress’ residence. It includos a telephone bureau, telephone exchange and a set of private boxes. It cost £1475.
