TRAIN ACCIDENT.
COLLISION NEAR PLIMMERTON. A train accident, fortunately not attended with loss of life, occurred to the up-train from Wellington on Saturday evening, near Plimmerton. It appears that tho engino had a heavy load, and failed to negotiate the hill between Plimmerston and Ptikerua. Tho train was then cut in two, and on tho foremost part being taken as far as Pukerua the engine returned for the back carriages. By some means the engine collided with tho train. The leading carriages and passengers received the full shock. Tho passengers were thrown down forcibly, and many were badly bruised by collision with tlieir fcllowpassnngcrs. Several carriage windows | were cracked, and minor damages done | to tho ears. Fortunately the injuries to I the passengers were mostly of a minor mi lure. Two, however, Messrs Stanley Withers and William Steel, were so badly injured that they wero brought on to the Otaki Hospital for treatment. Mr Withers had a very nasty cut lip. After treatment he was discharged yesterday. Mr Steel is suffering from shock. nc will need treatment for some little time, but his case is not a serious one. Mr Steel was on his way to Lovin, to join his wife (nee Miss Eva Judd, well-known in Otaki and district), 'who is on a visit to her sister (Mrs Hugh Cockrell) at Levin. One of the railway carriages sustained a broken axle. Tho accident and the delay caused by the overloading caused the train to be very late on arrival at Otaki.
