PERSISTENT PRISONER.

The mar, Kirkman. who recently wounded himself in the ddck while answering a charge of forgery, is proving a desperate problem (telegraphs the Cromwell correspondent of the "Otago Daily Times"). Last week, while undergoing treatment in the hospital under police surveillance, he made his escape, but was recaptured after 24 hours' freedom. On Wednesday morning he was again handed over to the police and placed err trial, but again he created a sensation by drawing a razor from the folds of the bandage on his wounded arm and inflicting a wound on the other arm. His removal to the hospital was again necessary, and also the adjournment of the case.
