OTAKI GOLF CLUB.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING,
At the. annual general meeting of the above, held on Friday night last, there was a very good attendance, the capram (Mr Byron Brown) being in the .hair.
The secretary’s report and balancesheet were adopted. The report was as under:
‘ ‘ The most interesting events during uur last season’s golf were the mutches against other clubs, which had lapsed luring recent years owing to the war. 'Our leant did very well indeed, not having been beaten during the season. We had victories against the Hutt, r.evic. and .lohnsonviile Golf Clubs, .md rmr match against the Mauawatu ri„l> . nded in a draw. All the matches sere- played on our own links, and therefore we had tin advantage against :lih visiting teams. “During the coming season we should play return matches on our opponents’ links, and it is up to members ;o endeavour, if it is possible, to get away. \Ye tire only a small club, and if om- or two drop out from the proposed visits it will spoil our team, so I , l; -k members to consider that they have their duties to their clubs as well as to their business. We all very much regret ihnt Mr Griffiths has left us. He was our keenest player, and last year, when on his game, played excellent golf, but, whether he was playing well or badly, he never seemed discouraged, and was always cheerful and bright. We shall miss him greatly during the season. A- treasurer he did "X- ---. oil. t;: work for the dub, and will be liar.;! : t •.•pine?. r.using to our financial position. ; .Vi,diet.- will notice our bank overdraft was ighity inert used during the year. ittls was .-unsei by four reasons: Firstly, the rate of wages increased from los per day to 12s owing to the increased cost of living. Secondly, we made permanent improvements on the links by making several new tees. These two reasons caused our wages account to go up from £33 7s for the previous year to £49 9s last year. Thirdly, expenses caused by visiting teams, four of which enjoyed our hospitalitv. Lastly, you very generously mafic a presentation to your humble secretary. The above four items show an increase of £3O ovor the previous vear’s expenses, and us our overdraft increased only £22, I think wc can congratulate ourselves on our position. Thre is also a sum of £7 still outstanding for subscriptions.
“Our greenkeeper last season sublet liis work. I did not think it was a
satisfactory arrangement, but it would have been a very difficult matter to replace ham. and the work was well done. You will remember it was a very dry autumn, and the greens suffered accordingly, ,-u they were not quite as good as
‘ ‘ Members who showed the most improvement during the season were Griffiths and P. Simcox. The former reduced his handicap considerably, but is still au erratic player. If he plays steadily for a few more seasons he should reach that Mecca of all true goiters—-the scratch mark. F. Simcox, :ir the end of the 'season, played better golf Thau he ever has get, and won the championship easily, though it must be \ noted That our two strongest players /j£iik .-.ut* Winterburn) did not compere, ' : i regret to say the Ladies' Championship fell through, Mrs Winterburn TTeing unable to play- The other Igdie-i felt It would be like Hamlet ... . 7 -.he Prince of Denmark to play viTnon pnie-s she was eomn championship - __ peting. - “ai the last genera) meeting a desire was expressed to present f<}{JF ?ec* ret aw with a memnto in eonsidewition of his many years’ work for the clubA beautiful piece of plate was given him by the captain on behalf of tho club, and he expressed members’ feelings of gratitude to the secretary for his services. ’ < ~
Members thought the present insurance on ’he pavilion (£100) was not sufficient, and the secretary was instructed to increase it to the maximum amount the company would insure. The secretary was authorised to pur-i-lmse twelve dozen golf balls for the coming esason,
Election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr W. H. Simcox (re-elected); captain, Mr 0. H. (X Hedditch: hon. treasurer, Mr W, Bennett; hoc. secretary, Mr E. Hopkms (reelected); committee. Messrs C. Atmore. W. M. Simcox F. S. Simcox; hon. auditor. Mr Dando.
