THE FISHING INDUSTRY
A notice appears in another part of this paper calling a public meeting for Thursday (to-morrow) at S p.m. in connotion with the fishing industry. j.ne Government has authorised tho sum of £25,000 to be expended annually in
fostering the industry, and will advance . loans up to £SOOO to assist fishermen. 'Thus the Governmont are showing their : sympathy in a practical manner, and I tho people should help themselves. This i matter is very important to our dis- ; trj'ct, in common with others. Whereas we could at one time buy for one shilling a fish large enough for a family of half a dozen, at present we have to pay four or five shillings for the same sized fish, and it is difficult to secure fish at all for weeks at a stretch. With the assistance of the Government, there is no reason why we should not be able to establish a fishing industry in this district, which-should ensure a regular supply of fresh fish at a reasonable price. We hope to see a large gathering at Hie meeting on Thursday night, when a practical proposition will be placed before the residents.
