HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. Tho ordinary monthly meeting of the above Council was held at Wellington yesterday. Present: Crs. F G. Cooper (chairman), W. Galloway, W. .7. Howell, M. W. Welch, J. Whitcman, P. Cavanagh. Correspondence. Correspondence was read and dealt < with as under:— f .Front N.Z. Railways relative to the railway reserve at Pukerua, stating the Department could not consent to give the land to the Council as it might be needed at a future date. —Received. ' From Internal Affairs Department re objections to the proposed town district at PKmmcrton, stating objections must be published in the Gazette.—Cr. Welch suggested patting in an objection on account of there already being too many local bodies, and stated he was in favour of merging local bodies instead of creating them. Cr. Howell moved that the matter be left to the chairman and clerk to ascor- : tain the position from the Council's solicitor. —Agreed to. From H. Baker asking permission to cut up a block of land at Plimmcrton. —Referred to inspector and Cr. Galloway, with power to act. From F. Barlow, regarding diversion of a drain at Plimmcrton, which had been granted him by the Council, but stopped by Cr. Galloway.—Cr. Galloway gave the letter a completo denial. —Decided to reply stating the letter was contrary to fact. From J. E. Ford, asking permission to erect temporary gate at Normandale. —Granted.

. From Dr. Anson (Lower Hutt) asking for particulars relative to road formation. —To bo supplied. From A. Steward (Haeretaungn) offering to supply stones for crushing, ami agreeing to deposit them where necessary.—The Chairman stated ho had accepted the offer and made arrangements for their deposit. From W. H. Field re roads damaged through extra traffic due to the railway cut.-and stating the Minister was agreeable to consider each application for claims on its merits. —Decided that the inspector make out a claim, and to thank Mr Field for the interest he had displayed in the matter. . From N.Z. National Service League, asking for a donation for its funds. — Not entertained,, From Mangahao Hydro-Electric Power League, reporting on the work as being carried out at Shannon, and stating it was not • satisfied with the progress of the work.—Placed on the-table. Reports.

The ranger reported that during the month he had seized 20 head of stock, had sued scv.eral offenders, received convictions, and that other court cases were pending. —Received. The motor-lorry driver's report stated that several repairs to the lorry had been effected, and was now doing satisfactory work. The Chairman's suggestion that 50 cases of benzine for the lorry be procured was ix>t favoured, it being pointed out; fhat a similar experience had proved a mistake owing tt> leakage. The inspector (Mr Cudoy) .reported that five pipe culverts had been put »n in the Whareroa riding, three being placed between Waikanae. and Paraparaumu, one at Maungakotukutuku, and the other at Waterfall Gully road. A concrete arch culvert at Kaitokc had been undermined by recent floodwaters, the result being that the wall had dropped several inches and requiTefl immediate attention. A bridge of 22ft span had been erected near Nai Nai. The main road north of Upper Hutt to the foot of Mungaroa hill had been repaired and was now in good order. Paremata-Pahautanui road has been considerably improved, while the road Pahautanui to Plimmcrton was in very good ordev. There was slight improvement on Horokiwi Valley road, while the roads in Whareroa were in fair to good order. He recommended the wooden bridge near Day's Bay wharf be renewed .in concrete.—Report adopted. The overdraft was reported to be £4717 4s 7d, while accounts amounting to £1093 2s 4d were passed for payment.

It was decided to raise the Chair man's honorarium by £3O per year. .
